This Month’s Read:

SENTENCED, by M J Whelan. (Contemporary, Psychological, Fiction. Published 2025)

Liz’s world collapses when she learns the police have arrested her son and his partner.

Forced to make a quick decision, she takes in their three-year-old daughter, Freya – a grandchild she never knew she had.

As Liz learns to ease the child’s heartache, social workers raise questions over her demanding job and her commitment to Freya.

Inside HMP Graybarrows, Liz devotes her days to helping prisoners battle with fear, loss, and guilt. Her work gives her purpose – but when the boundaries between prison and home blur, can Liz find balance between the broken men behind bars and the little girl whose life has just begun?

This Month’s Review:

The Earl’s Dangerous Secret, by Ellie Henshaw. (Historical Romance. Published 2024)

“A tortured Earl in search of a traitor. A debutante protecting her family. A love that could destroy them both.”

If you like historical intrigue and enemies to lovers romance then you’ll enjoy this book. Emily Ellerton is attracted to Nathan, Earl of Thornburn, at their very first meeting. Unfortunately, he has arrived on her doorstep to arrest her brother for treason, with a dark secret that means he is interested only in serving his country. The two protagonists are torn between love and loyalty. You will want to read on to see how they battle with each other and their hearts, to reach a dramatic conclusion.

Ellie is a member of Keyboard to Kindle. I will be selling The Earl’s Dangerous Secret, alongside my debut The Joy of Jars, at the next Book Extravaganza in Birmingham, on Saturday, September 12th

Each month, I aim to review and read books that are either self-published or by less well known authors. Both of September’s picks are from author’s I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in person.

If you’d like me to read and review your book, please let me know, using my website’s contact page or email info@joannebarkerauthorevents.com
